Does Your Website Google?

Google is so popular it is now a word in many dictionaries. As defined by the Oxford English Dictionary:

Google: Verb - To use the Google search engine to find information on the Internet. To search for information about (a person or thing) using the Google search engine.

Getting leading placement in the organic (unpaid) search results of the leading search engines is an art... it takes time, experience and knowledge of how the search engines work to get a website listed. Do The Test!

Go to Google, Yahoo or MSN and search for "pizza in Fitchburg Mass" or "Italian Restaurant in Fitchburg Mass" or even "Seafood in Fitchburg Mass". Find the restaurant at the top of these results and go look at their website. At the bottom of the page, you will probably see "Powered by GlassMenus.Com"

How Do We Do It?

In one word.... experience! The rumor in the Search Engine Optimization (SEO) biz is that Google uses over 130 variables to decide which pages to return for a particular search query. It is also well known in the SEO biz that Google’s formula is top secret and worth millions since knowing how they do it would mean websites could force their way to the top of Google’s results; guarenteeing those websites commercial success.

Of course, we’re not going to tell you how we do it; just like you wouldn’t publish your secret recipes. What we will do is give you a glimpse of some of what we look at to improve our customers' rank within the search engine results.

The following graph shows a week in the life of one of our client’s websites. For the week ending on July 22nd, this site had 745 visits and 3195 Pageviews for an average of 4.29 PageViews/Visit. Notice how the number of visits and page views goes up as the week goes by; not unsual in the restaurant industry. In fact, this resturant is closed on Monday and only open for dinner on Saturday and Sunday. Can you imagine, 745 visitors a week with 145 on Friday alone to your restaurant’s website??

Visits and Pageviews

The next graph shows the percent of first time visitors compared to returning visits. This ratio of almost 2 new visitors to every returning visitor shows that this website is attracting attention! This tells us that this website received 475 new visitors this week.

Visits By New And Returning

And finally, this last graph shows us the top referral sources; those websites that send people to our client’s website. Notice that Google is responsible for 42% of referrals with Yahoo and MSN contributing about 12%. Only about 32% of this site’s visitors come in directly without a referral source.

Visits By Source

These are just a couple of the metrics we monitor to get our clients’ websites visible to the search engines and therefore findable by new and existing customers.
